Short answer: No health insurance policy we read in India names cardiac rehab. But every policy we read pays costs after a hospital stay, for the same illness, for 60 to 180 days after discharge. So after a stent or a bypass, physician supervised, exercise based cardiac rehab can often be claimed this way, as a refund.

Is cardiac rehab part of paid care abroad?
In the United States, Medicare pays for cardiac rehab. Its rule is called 42 CFR 410.49. It covers people after a stent or angioplasty, a bypass, or a heart attack in the last 12 months, and some others too.
Heart guidelines explain why. US guidelines give cardiac rehab their top grade, Class I, after a heart attack, a stent or a bypass. European guidelines give it Class I for long-term heart disease (Taylor, Nature Reviews Cardiology, 2022).
Does health insurance in India name cardiac rehab?
Not yet. We read 14 health insurance policy wordings from 8 insurers on 7 October 2026. None of them uses the words cardiac rehab, or cardiac rehabilitation.
India’s insurance regulator, IRDAI, sets the rules for health policies. Its master circular of 29 May 2024 asks insurers to make products available for many kinds of care, including outpatient care. But we found no rule in it that makes insurers pay for cardiac rehab.
What is the route that works today?
Every policy we read pays costs after a hospital stay, for the same illness. Policies call this post-hospitalisation cover. It lasts 60 to 180 days after discharge, depending on the policy. It pays only if the insurer accepted your hospital claim.

So a patient who had a stent or a bypass can often claim cardiac rehab this way. These costs are usually paid back to you after you claim, so they are not cashless. The insurer decides each claim, and nobody can promise it will be paid.
Which policies name physio?
Three policies we read name physio in this cover. Niva Bupa Health Premia pays it if the treating doctor prescribes it in writing. Niva Bupa ReAssure 3.0 pays it if it relates to the same condition, and ICICI Lombard Elevate pays it if the treating doctor advises it in writing. Our answer page lists all 11 policies we checked, with their days.
Why does this matter?
Cardiac rehab is part of treatment, not an extra. A Cochrane review of 107 studies, published in 2026, found 28% fewer heart attacks and 35% fewer hospital stays with exercise based cardiac rehab. Fewer hospital stays could also mean fewer claims for insurers.
What can you do today?
You can use the route that exists now. It needs a few papers, kept from the first day. These four steps help your claim.
- Ask your treating doctor to write that you need cardiac rehab.
- Start within the days your policy allows after discharge.
- Keep every bill and receipt.
- Send your claim on time.
We give you an invoice for your programme and a numbered receipt for every payment. We also give a letter from our Cardiac Rehab Physician saying why you need cardiac rehab. For the full list of papers and policies, read does health insurance pay for cardiac rehab?
What do we hope for?
We hope insurers in India will name cardiac rehab in their policies. Many health systems abroad already pay for it. Until then, the cost after a hospital stay is the route we can use.
Your questions, answered
Does health insurance in India pay for cardiac rehab?
Often, yes, but not by name. None of the 14 policy wordings we read names cardiac rehab. But all of them pay costs after a hospital stay for the same illness, for 60 to 180 days after discharge. So cardiac rehab after a stent or a bypass can often be claimed this way. Your own policy decides.
Is cardiac rehab cashless under my policy?
Usually not. Costs after a hospital stay are mostly paid back to you after you claim. You pay first, keep every bill and numbered receipt, and send the claim on time. Many policies give 15 to 30 days to claim after the cover period ends.
Can I claim cardiac rehab without a hospital stay?
Usually not under this route. It needs an accepted hospital claim first, for example for an angioplasty or a bypass. Without a hospital stay, check whether your policy has outpatient cover, and read what it pays for. Ask your insurer if you are not sure.
What papers do I need for the claim?
Keep the filled and signed claim form and the discharge summary. Add your treating doctor’s letter saying you need cardiac rehab, and every bill and payment receipt. We give you an invoice, a numbered receipt for every payment, and a letter from our Cardiac Rehab Physician.
